I’M HERE!! My plane landed in Bangkok around 9:00 AM (9:00 PM CST). I will make this quick by just posting some noteworthy travel events:
-About 20 minutes into the flight, I was handed a steaming hot, wet washcloth. At first I had no idea what to do with it, but after looking around I saw people wiping their faces and hands. It was refreshing, but I’m still not sure why it was necessary.
-The food on flight #1 was really bad. I ate some of it, and then had some chewy sprees (thanks Tay!)
-My legs were incredibly restless the entire 10 hour flight.
-6 hours in- I threw up. (But then I was fine).
-Once I arrived at the Istanbul airport, I learned that I had to wait for my next gate to be posted. I went into the food court (which was packed full of people) and while I was clearly searching for a spot, an old man waved me over to his table, so that was really nice.
-An hour later my gate was posted and I walked all the way there and figured out I couldn’t use the wifi, and so I walked all the way back to the food court.
-Once I finally figured out the wifi, I had about 7 minutes before my plane was supposed to start boarding. At least now I know for my layover on my way back to the States in December.
-This is yet to be confirmed- but I’m pretty sure VISA shut off my access to my debit card. I told my bank I was going, but apparently I have to alert VISA as well. So, we’ll see how that goes.
-Flight #2 was great. Decent food, no restless legs, no throwing up. Also, the man next to me sang out loud to himself randomly throughout the flight which was very entertaining for me.
-Arrival was great. Immigration was quick and easy, and so was getting my checked bag. As soon as I walked around the corner from baggage claim, I saw Sandra (the director of Impact School of Missions) smiling and holding up the school logo on a sign. After a big hug she introduced me to my new roommate who had come along to pick me up! Her name is Monique, and we will have 2 other roommates (Sarah and Hartley) who will be joining us soon.
-I had my first experience riding in a car on the left side of the road. It was fascinating to me, but I tried not to seem too excited about it.
-We passed 5 7-Eleven convenient stores during our 15-minute drive. (Feels like home to me).
This afternoon we are going to the market to get lunch, and then I believe the plan is to go grocery shopping. Also, here are some pictures of my new home. -E
